Satellite Messengers

Satellite messengers send short texts and SOS alerts from anywhere with a clear sky view, no cell tower required — useful well beyond normal phone coverage, like backcountry trips. Most require a separate subscription plan on top of the device cost, and plans vary significantly by provider.

What to look for

  • Subscription cost: the device price is often the smaller cost — check the ongoing plan price and whether it can be paused seasonally.
  • Two-way vs. one-way: some devices only send preset messages or an SOS signal; others allow full two-way texting.
  • Coverage network: different devices rely on different satellite networks, which can affect reliability in specific regions.
