Antennas
Antenna choice affects range and reliability more than almost any other factor in a radio setup — a better antenna on a basic radio often outperforms a premium radio with its stock antenna. Height and a clear line of sight matter as much as the antenna itself.
What to look for
- Height matters more than wattage: raising an antenna often improves range more than a more powerful radio does.
- Line of sight: hills, buildings, and dense trees all reduce range regardless of antenna quality.
- Connector compatibility: not all antennas fit all radios — check connector type before buying an upgrade.
